2nd Set of Pictures

A few more pictures from last night's protest. I was shocked to see parents bringing their children into a protest like this.

There are also a few additional picture that clearly show water bottles and debris that was unfortunately thrown by some some of the protestors at the Toronto Police officers who were trying to prevent the protestors from gaining access to the highway.

Tamil Protesters Block Downtown Toronto Highway

Tamil protesters blockade Toronto highway.

Digg these pictures at:

At about 6:00 pm this evening (Sunday, May 10th, 2009) a group of Tamil Protesters stormed several police officers trying to prevent them from accessing the Gardiner Expressway and closed the highway in both directions. The following pictures show the events as they transpired beginning at about 6:00 pm.

I have 600+ pictures taken this evening. If any members of the Toronto Police, OPP, or the media would like any additional pictures, please contact me at jmackenziesanfrancisco@gmail.com.

The protest ended shortly after midnight. A massive protest by Toronto's Tamil community that shut down the Gardiner Expressway for more than six hours last night ended shortly after midnight. The end came shortly after a representative in Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff's office promised to bring up the demonstrators' cause - sanctions against the Sri Lankan government until it enters into a ceasefire with Tamil rebels in the country's north - in Parliament. Not sure what to think of this - did Ignatieff validate the protest and perhaps unintentionally encourage more of the same?
